Meat CSA

What is a CSA?
Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and the local community, providing mutual benefits and reconnecting people to the land where their food is grown.
Ferndale Farms offers a certain number of shares for six months based on the number of animals we are raising. Our CSA provides access to high quality food that people can trust, knowing that the animals they eat are raised locally, ethically, sustainably, and humanely.
The meat will be an assortment of beef, lamb and goat. These shares are distributed once a month at pre-arranged locations. Unlike most CSA models, we charge monthly rather than upfront. We also guarantee the lbs. of meat each month. The risk is in the type of meat, which can be affected by who is ready for “harvest” and issues at the slaughterhouse that may be beyond our control. Some months we may plan to process beef, but the lambs or goats are ready and the beef could benefit from another month on pasture. Thus, members would receive more lamb or goat that month.

Why CSA?

Here are just some of the key benefits:
Benefits to the local communities
  • consumers benefit from receiving fresh food from a known source
  • the environmental benefits of fewer 'food miles', less packaging and sustainable farming with improved animal welfare
  • a local economy enhanced by higher employment, more local processing, local consumption and a re-circulation of money through 'local spend'
  • educating people about varieties of food, it's production methods and costs
  • having an influence over the local landscape and encouraging more sustainable farming
Benefits to the farmers
  • guaranteed income.  This financial security improves business planning and provides time to concentrate on the farm
  • a higher and fairer return for their products by selling directly to the public
  • increased involvement in the local community; the opportunity to respond directly to consumers' needs
If you join you will
  • be brought into a direct relationship with the land where your food is grown
  • receive a monthly supply of locally grown, high quality, grass fed & finished meat
  • benefit from the good value & convenience
  • help maintain the landscape of Humboldt County through supporting small traditional farms
  • contribute to a sustainable food system
  • learn about new cuts of meat and new ways of cooking them
What are the share sizes and how much does it cost?
Meat CSA shares are available in full, half and quarter sizes.  Share sizes are based on pounds per month.  Payment for the Meat CSA is due with each monthly pick-up.  An initial deposit is required with the membership application in the amount equal to one months share.  This deposit will be held and used to pay the last share.  Each monthly box has an approximate amount, in lbs., of frozen cuts from our several species of livestock (beef, lamb and goat), categorzied as Steaks, Roasts & Braising, and Ground (see below).  At our discretion, we will fill a package with frozen cuts of meat that fit each category. Should you prefer to not receive meat from a particular species, you will be able to exempt one species in the initial subscription form.

What time of year is the CSA offered?
Our new Meat CSA will run from October thru March.
